While Copenhagen is walkable and bikable for a myriad of reasons, it is worth noting that its architecture is one such reason. Monotonous facades make for a dull pedestrian experience. While sculptural or large buildings don’t cater to the human scale at the street level, they provide a point of reference and landmark for pedestrians and cyclists. Additionally, the variety that such structures add to the city skyline increases visual interest.
Another way in which the architecture of Copenhagen contributes to sustainability is in its skillful incorporation of new buildings amidst older ones. This strategy takes advantage of the embodied energy in existing buildings while increasing density with the addition of new buildings.

Innovation on the Waterfront: Bo01 in Malmo
Malmo, Sweden is in the process of transforming itself from industrial port city to a modern metropolis based on new jobs, universities, and tourism. Much of the city’s success is predicated on creating and promoting sustainable design. The landmark for Malmo’s transformation is the Vestra Hamnen (or western harbor) and the Bo01 housing area, part of an international exposition on housing design in 2001. The most prominent and famous of the residential structures is the Turning Torso designed by Santiago Calatrava, a 45 story tower seen from all over the region, and the symbol of Malmo’s turnaround.
The photos you see below are based on three themes we offered the students: innovative housing design; visible storm water management as art, and the water’s edge as a recreation and aesthetic space. Bo01 is sustainable in a number of ways: virtually car free, dense and well served by city busses, walk-able, surface storm water drainage, solar water heating, 100% renewable and efficient energy for heating and electricity (wind, solar, waste to energy, heat pump using the sea and the limestone sub-surface, district heating), high level of recycling, and unique design.
We spent a lot of time at the waterfront on bikes, on foot, and basking in the July sunshine enjoying the cool waters of the North Sea (and the occasional ice cream).

Augustenborg Green Roof
Most ecologically based communities are relatively wealthy and relatively new. Augustenborg in Malmo, Sweden is neither. Fashioning a sustainable neighborhood out of a working class 1950’s manufacturing and public apartment district is a difficult and impressive undertaking, but, starting 11 years ago with some funds from the European Union and Swedish government, they began to retool the aging suburb. The main features you see are green roofs (lots of them), surface storm water drainage and various types of photo-voltaics and solar water heating units. What you do not see are years of careful participatory work with residents and neighbors to find out their views, assess what sustainability means to each person and create solutions that can transform this area quietly and slowly. Some of the other gems hidden from view include a soccer (football) field of clay underlain by water tubes, that send solar heated water to the co-generation plant and help cool the field in winter allowing a more consistent ice rink. In addition, new insulation, paints and surfaces are improving the health for residents. But, in the end, it is the many types and intensities of green roofs (and the wonderful educational presentations put on by Louise Lundberg of the Scandanavian Green Roof Association) that most impressed our class. It is one thing to start from scratch with a large site, and a lot of funding; it is quite another to chip away at an existing neighborhood, board by board, plant by plant to make a difference.

Bjorkhagen: Village in the Forest
A 15 minute train/subway ride south of the center of Stockholm, a little known ecological community thrives in the birch forest that bears its name. Built 15 years ago, as a housing cooperative, Bjorkhagen is a model of ecological living with a small footprint. It is hard to find; a 10 minute walk from the train station, and carefully tucked within the forest. 75-100 units of modest sized wooden houses, all made of local materials and designed by the residents who would occupy the neighborhood. No cars, virtually no pavement, and gardens, forests, and pathways make this a highly livable and low impact neighborhood. This place was too quiet for our class of 28 to descend upon, so a handful of students went to visit and to take the photos you see.
Walkable Stockholm
What makes a walkable city? Having spent a week roaming the center of Stockholm, we asked ourselves that question. Stockholm is a remarkable city with most unremarkable weather – cold wet winters, and cool wet, windy (and fickle) summers. It rained almost every day we were there; not a great formula for walking. Yet, rain or shine, cold or warm, winter or summer, everyone walks, and fast. Why?
First, driving is inconvenient, and expensive. Streets are congested, parking is costly (if available), and the network is ancient and complex. Some of that is historical artifact, some by design (such as a congestion pricing scheme). But, far more important, are the joys that Stockholm walking offers. Wide, accessible sidewalks; expansive and interesting plazas and public spaces connected and inviting; good lighting (not needed in the long summer days/nights; and a feeling of safety. And, it is the light and air. Maybe not Paris, but the northern equivalent. Blue space is everywhere, with harbors, ships new and old, piers, and waterfront developments. The air is crisp even on warm days, and the clouds change with every glance.
Of course, the land use mix is right – and transit allows you the luxury of walking. Like many world class urban centers, the mix of shops, restaurants, museums, institutional buildings and businesses on the first floors keep you interested, while the 4-6 stories of flats, apartments and businesses keep people there 24/7. But, Stockholm offers more – historic buildings with many varied yet somehow consistent colors, all scaled to the mid-rise city. Even some of the built “mistakes” and buildings of dubious merit stand out and add interest.
Stockholm also gets some of the little things right. Easy to read and understand signage at a pedestrian scale. Separation of bike paths from sidewalks, long accessible walk signals, narrow lanes and streets, and pedestrian safe zones and islands everywhere. Art, sculpture, flexible exhibit spaces, unique signage, all hit the walker with every step. As with many large cities, there is no one Stockholm walking experience; the history of Gamla Stan is quite different from the formal streetscapes of the Normalm; the friendly noisy sidewalks of the Sodermalm are quite different from the quiet, stylish neighborhoods of the Ostrermalm. But, all of it walkable.
All is not perfect. Keeping the historic city going requires seemingly constant construction. Transit, while impressive, can be frustrating and hard to follow. Some of the shopping streets are too successful, and feel jammed and rushed. The harbor strolls can be long and cold.
But, the bottom line is people! A dense urban place with many attractions, vibrant economic uses, and a diverse and lively street life calls out for you to walk the next block, and the next and the next. For our class, walking (and transit) was how we travelled for a week, and we saw a lot.

Reducing Energy Consumption at Hammarby Sjostad
On Wednesday, we went to Hammarby Sjostad, a former brownfield waterfront that the city has transformed into one of its twelve growth/infill redevelopment areas. This large-scale mixed-use project is intended to embody the best environmental design principles of the last decade. With over 10,000 residents and 6,000 jobs, the project is well on its way to being built out. The project won’t be completed for another 5+ years.
We decided to focus on the ways in which they are trying to minimize energy demand and reduce greenhouse gas emissions and fossil fuel impacts.
Fundamental to saving energy is the high-density, mixed-use design less than a 10-minute tram and subway ride to downtown Stockholm on land that was formerly dedicated to polluting, industrial uses. As a results of this and other innovations listed below, Hammarby has already achieved 2/3 of its trips by transit, ferry, bike and walking. Only 1/3 of its trips are from private automobile.
Here are some of the ways that energy reduction is being achieved.
28 students visited the development and found evidence of these energy-saving techniques as they walked around. Here are some of their impressions:
“I appreciate that there are plenty of places for people to be outside of their homes. People don’t need to travel far to enjoy the sunshine.”
“It seemed that there was a lot of glass everywhere, and in California that wouldn’t fly. They are trying to maximize the amount of sun, but they are paying the price. Gets really hot in the summer and loses heat in the winter.”
“The design aspect of very few cars and many bicycles, means less car trips and less carbon dioxide.”

- Structures required to meet high energy efficiency standards. (Several students noticed, and experts confirmed, that the buildings did not live up to their original energy ratings because of the extensive use of glass for aesthetics, light and air.)
- Re-use of historic buildings - less consumption of materials
- Landscaping is not manicured. Grass-cycling is evident - clippings are left for mulch. Developers preserved the oak forest and created restored wetlands
- Limited parking is available and spots are high-priced, with preferential parking given to car sharing

Stockholm Royal Seaport Redevelopment Project
Our first couple days in Stockholm have been wonderful. Typical Stockholm weather -sun, rain, clouds, sun, rain, clouds....we spent the first day orienting ourselves to the issues and challenges of sustainability, and taking a 2 hour walking tour of the downtown, plazas, neighborhoods and streetscapes of the city (and, oh yeah, eating a huge vegetarian dinner on the bluffs of Sodermalm).
Day 2 started with a lecture from Thomas Stoll, an architect and planner with the City of Stockholm. Thomas and his colleague Johannes Claeson were kind enough to tell us all about one of the next major redevelopment areas of the city, the Royal Seaport. A 660 acre brownfield development only minutes by subway from downtown, is an integral part of the city's overall planning strategy to "build the city inward." The site is one of 12 future infill/redevelopment areas that will accomodate the majority of the city's growth in the next 30-40 years. The site is an old industrial port that was home to gas and oil plants, and other major industries. The Royal Seaport will be redeveloped into 10,000 new housing units for 25,000 residents, and 30,000 new jobs in various sectors. The environmental goals for the project, built on the success of Hammarby Sjostad (see tomorrow's blog), are ambitous: fossil fuel free district by 2030, adapted to climate change, and focused on ecological cycles. The project also has an impressive emphasis on social goals and interaction such as public participation, accessibility, children's enjoyment and use, historical and cultural sites preservation, and reuse of old structures (like a gas plant for a concert hall!).
How will they do it? Like Hammarby, they are closely linked to the subway, tram and ferry system; most of the inner part of the project will be car free; they hope to beat Hammarby's ratio of car trips to transit/walk/bike trips of 2/3 to 1/3. There will be only .5 parking spaces per unit; and there will be many lifestyle innovations like car sharing, bike and walking promtion, and smart transit information in homes (e.g. a real time map of when the bus or train will come). Also like many parts of the city, they will use district heating and cooling from a co-generation plant located on site (it is already part of the industrial area). The plant will use a combination of bio-fuels from lumber waste and urban waste and various oils (like olive oil waste). They will also make bio-gas and collect energy from the wastewater treatment process. The buildings will all have maximum energy efficiency (they are experimenting with our LEED system); and they will have a unique recycling system like Hammarby.
This major project is just in the planning stages, but it appears to be the "next step up" from Hammarby (which is fully built). They are still working on how to measure and monitor their performance, and they will need to work carefully with each and every developer and builder to ensure that their targets are met. The world will wait and see and wish the City the best of luck!
